Let your back Give in to the Pressure – Acupressure, that is
Acupressure utilizes specific pressure points within the body to relieve symptoms of many common disorders. A skilled practitioner will use their thumbs and fingers (sometimes the elbow) to apply pressure to specific body points. Some of the conditions that can benefit from acupressure include elimination and/or reduction of back pain, headache, low energy, anxiety, stress, and tension. Acupressure is known to relieve emotions of sadness and boost the immune system as well.
Acupressure is strongly associated with other kinds of Oriental medicine such as acupuncture and shiatsu. The idea of Oriental medicine developed approximately in the year 600 BC when Taoism evolved; opinions that focus on the human connection to nature. Oriental medicine believes the changes in nature impact human lives mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Many changes affect the body on a daily basis and have an effect on the flow of Qi (pronounced “chee”), or vital energy. The use of acupressure is used to correct this balance and produce harmony within the body.
When Qi is flowing effortlessly throughout the body, you experience good health. On the other hand, if this current of energy is blocked acupressure can release Qi to work toward restoring the body’s balance. Those who practice Oriental medicine believe that Qi flows through Channels (or Meridians) situated near the surface of the body. There are 12 Channels connected to specific organs. Acupoints or pressure points are situated on the Channels. When precise pressure is exerted onto an acupoint, the gate opens and Qi flows through. Another way to think of Qi is in terms of blood flowing continually throughout the body to maintain life.
The way acupressure works is by directing pressure on precise points on the body to release Qi. Application of pressure requires accuracy because there are approximately 365 points located on the major Channels. There are also more than 650 individual pressure points. Comparable to the circulatory system’s network of vessels, each Channel has a network of links. Different methods are used to influence Qi in the Channels. These techniques include tonify, diffuse, and calm. If the person were experiencing weak Qi, the professional would tonify. If the Qi were blocked then they would disperse the Qi and if it were overactive, they would calm the Qi. The applied pressure is often held for several seconds to minutes. There are different movements that may be used to apply the pressure such as circular movements, firmer pressure, pushing the acupoint in and out, or a combination of each of them. Even though the points manipulated may be sensitive, the treatment of acupressure should not be painful. Depending upon the condition, treatment may vary from once a week to daily.
Although acupressure is not restricted to a person’s age, people with high blood pressure and pregnant women should not engage in acupressure therapy. There are particular acupressure points that can cause miscarriage. If you have open wounds, scar tissue, varicose veins, or areas of inflammation or swelling acupressure should not be considered as a form of treatment. Often back and joint pain is caused by poor posture. The neck is particularly vulnerable due to head and neck range of motion. Trauma can be a cause of soft tissue damage. Certain acupoints between the cervical spine and the top of the shoulder can be relieved with acupressure. When the flow of blood is improved, toxins are washed away, and oxygen and healing nutrients are provided.
If you are experiencing back pain, you are probably on some form of painkiller and it would be unwise to discontinue use when you are receiving acupressure. Never stop medications unless your health care professional says it is appropriate. It normally takes anywhere from five to 15 sessions of acupressure to relieve or eliminate back pain. Remember always to check the credentials of anyone who practices any type of medical treatments including acupressure. As with any type of treatment, it is best to get several opinions (including the advice of your doctor) before beginning. Often acupressure can be used in conjunction with other forms of therapy. Back pain can be debilitating and it is easy to be distracted by claims that state they can relieve your pain. Anyone who has suffered immense back pain knows the desire to try anything to be free of the pain and discomfort. Be wise in your choices. Check references and talk to others who have used acupressure to determine if this is the right course of treatment for your back problem.
