Pedal for Pain Relief – How Bike Riding Can Help you’re Back

from:

For those individuals who have suffered through back pain, you know it can be excruciating. Many exercises are available to help alleviate the pain you feel. Back pain can occur in either your upper or lower back and be experienced as mild or severe. The causes can be numerous from pulled muscles to disc or spinal injuries. If you are experiencing severe back pain, you should first see your health care professional. This article is going to look at how bike riding can be useful at minimizing the pain you experience in your back.

Bike riding can help keep you in shape. A fit body is more able to avert injuries or at least lessen the severity and healing time of back injuries. When your back becomes stiff or tense, you are more likely to feel pain. One of the benefits of cycling is that it keeps you mobile. When you ride a bike, the motions are not choppy or sudden they are smooth and gentle. Unexpected jolts can add to back pain. When you introduce movement to the damaged area, you are providing blood flow to enter this area and encourage healing. The movement of your back is from side to side as you pedal your legs up and down. It is important when bike riding to use a bike that is the right size and height for your body. If you ride a bike that is not the correct size, you can actually increase the pain in your back.

If you are not an avid cyclist, you should begin riding your bike for only a few minutes at a time at a very leisurely pace. With any form of exercise, you want to begin slowly and build up in frequency. With today’s technology, you do not have to go outside to ride a bike to benefit from cycling. You can go to a gym and use their stationary bikes or you may already have one at home.

The added benefit of cycling is not only the reduction of pain in your back but an aerobic work out as well. When you add aerobic exercise to your daily routine, you are helping to strengthen your back muscles, which will also aid in healing and prevention of further injuries. Riding a bike (whatever type you choose is an excellent low impact form of exercise that will help reduce lower back pain). Start slowly with cycling and remember you are not trying to stress yourself out you are building up strength in the spinal structures and easing the pain you feel in your lower back.

You will receive a wide range of health benefits when you start pedaling away back pain. As previously mentioned, when you exercise using a stationary or regular bike you are also getting a gentle, low-impact aerobic workout. This type of exercise puts minimal stress and pressure on the back. As with other forms of aerobic exercise, cycling does not jar the spine. If you are suffering from Spinal Stenosis, the use of a stationary exercise bike is ideal. Those who suffer from this medical condition prefer to lean forward a bit as opposed to sitting or standing up straight. You may suffer from Osteroarthritis and the movement that a stationary bike provides helps to keep your joints flexible, reduces stiffness, and tones up the muscles that support the joints. At the same time, the exercise is comfortable and low impact, thus reducing the pain in the joints.

When you ride a bike either stationary or outdoors, you strengthen the leg and thigh muscles. The hamstrings in the back of the thigh benefit and become strengthened as well. While pedaling the bike does not specifically strengthen the back muscles, it does generate movement and uses your back muscles for proper alignment while you are seated. When your leg muscles including the hamstrings are strong, they help reduce low back pain, which can occur from muscle strain. When you are pedaling away on your bike, remember that you are increasing your range of motion and flexibility in many of the joints in your spine. When you do not have enough movement in this area, it can become stiff and painful – leading to increased back pain.
