Frequent Causes of Back Pain and How to Avoid Them

from:

Frequent back pain is getting to be a very big problem with Americans today. 80% of the United States population has back problems and many more will experience it in their lifetime. There are many reasons for back pain, but luckily there are also ways to avoid them.

Problems with other organs may cause back pain. Appendicitis, aneurysms, kidney diseases, bladder infections, pelvic infections and ovarian disorders are some problems that can cause back discomfort. It is always a good idea to consult your doctor if you have chronic back pain to make sure that you are not suffering from any of these problems.

Sciatica pain comes from inflammation of the sciatic nerve. Pain is felt from your lower back, down to the back of your thigh and the pain will shoot down below your knee. This is the largest nerve in your body. The nerve roots begin in the lumbar spinal cord in your lower back and extend down through your buttocks area and then send nerve endings down to the lower limbs. Sciatica usually is caused by a disc herniation that puts pressure on a nerve. As a result of this, irritation or inflammation on this nerve can produce these warning signs of sciatica. Irritation can be caused by adjacent bone, tumors, injury, infections, internal bleeding.

It was thought that bed rest was the best treatment for sciatica. This is believed to not be any more effective than “watchful waiting”. Most common treatments are pain medication to help with the pain and inflammation and something to relax the muscles. Physical therapy is also great for sciatica.

There are ways to avoid sciatic pain and other reoccurring pain in your lower back. These include:

When lifting use a safe technique

Do not stand or sit in same position for to long at a time

Exercise and stretching on a regular basis can really be effective

Try not to carry a wallet in your back pocket

Sleep on back with pillow under knees or pillow in between knees if sleeping on

your side

Try to keep stomach muscles in shape

Always wear comfortable well-fitted shoes

A tilted pelvis may also be a cause for lower back pain. If you have one leg shorter than the other, this may cause a tilted pelvis. Also, a crooked spine will cause a tilted pelvis. For tilted pelvis and or lower back pain there is chiropractic treatment that can help. The following may help:

To treat your tilted pelvis, they may do spinal manipulation.

They may also use heat to ease muscle spasms

You may also be shown certain stretches that lengthen iliopsoas

You will also want to make sure that you are hydrating to get rid of inflamed

muscles

Things that can be done at home to help relieve your pain is:

Avoid strenuous activities

Start a daily stretching routine

Make sure that you drink plenty of water a day (40 ounces per day for every 100

pounds)

Make sure to walk as much as possible

When sleeping on your back put a pillow under knees

When sleeping on your side put a pillow in between knees

Try to lose weight if currently over weight or try and maintain weight if your not

Again, your diet and exercise play an important role in back pain. Water is very important to the body. It is needed to keep the body from becoming dehydrated. Water is a daily necessity. It is needed to keep acids and wastes from building up on muscles and tissues. Staying away from all meats and other animal proteins until back pain is gone will also help. These types of food contain uric acid, which can put a strain on your kidneys that will result in back pain. Also not eating oils, fats, sugars or any highly processed foods may also help, too.

Exercise is important. You should strive to keep your weight down where it should be so you are not putting a strain on your back. Also, strengthen muscles in your back. Great exercises for someone with back problems are swimming, cycling, walking and rowing.

These are ideas to help deal with back pain at home. You should see your doctor or chiropractor if these pains persist. You never know when it could be something really serious. Listen to your body and what it tells you.
