You’re on my Last Nerve . . . and it’s in my Back!

from:

Nerve damage in the back can be caused from many conditions. Some are caused by severe trauma of an accident, and some from degenerative diseases of the spinal column. Read on to learn about the different ways that a painful back can develop from the compression of nerves in the back. The best way to take care of your back is to know what can go wrong, and to look for appropriate treatment if your back gives you pain in the future.

A herniated disk, or a ruptured disk as it’s known in some circles, happens because the disk moves out place and into the nerve area of the spine. It can actually cause the nerves around the ligaments to become inflamed and radiate pain throughout the back. Accidents are the common cause of a herniated disk, but at times it is not known what has caused a herniated disk in the back. Oftentimes, you will be able to find pain relief by moving about instead of compressing the spine by sitting or standing in one place for a while. Pain from a herniated disk can come on suddenly or gradually. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to how the pain presents itself. It’s as unique as the individual that experiences the pain from nerve damage and compression.

Facet syndrome is like a typical pinched nerve in the back, but its pain is connected to the back’s joints known as facet joints. These joints connect to the ribs in the front. Each side has a joint that connects the rib cage to the spine. You’ll be able to tell if its facet’s painful syndrome because radiating upper leg pain, and at times the buttocks will be hurting and tender. There seems to be no comfortable position with facet joint pain. Lying, sitting, standing will aggravate the condition of pain. To help ease the pain proper exercises are the key to strengthen the supporting muscle, and to promote fluid movement. By strengthening muscles it’ll improve your posture, and aid in pain relief too.

Spondylolisthesis occurs if a disk slips forward in your lower back. Pain is thought to originate from the area of displacement, and from spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis is thought to occur because the disk is compressing the nerve canal in the back. The pack of nerve roots in the canal also presses on ligaments that are holding the muscles to the rib cage. Another disease is osteoarthritis. Inflammation of osteoarthritis can occur anywhere in the body, such as knee and wrist joints. In the back, inflammation is found in high concentrations around the cartilage and bone lying next to it. If you’ve got osteoarthritis you can help alleviate pain, and slow down deterioration by loosing weight. Loosing weight is really important for the back and spine, which has to carry the excess weight.

Cauda equina syndrome is a dangerous condition of inflammation of the lower bundle of nerves at the end of the spine. Never ignore the symptoms of sudden and severe abdominal and lower back pain. A common cause of the syndrome is a compressed disk, or infection from an abscess in the spine. Bladder or anal incontinence that is presents itself suddenly is another warning sign. If medical attention is not sought right away, paralysis will occur, and other types of damage such as sexual dysfunction and sensation to the legs and feet are reduced.

There are many other ways besides disease that can damage the nerves in the back. Car accidents can certainly produce painful nerve damage because of whiplash. Whiplash will primarily cause a radiating pain in the upper back region where your large muscles connect your shoulder blades together. If the impact is strong enough the spinal cord can be ripped from its place, and instantaneous death or paralysis will occur.

In truth, following your doctor’s advice can treat most common back pain ills. Prevent serious injury to the nerves in your back by using your common sense in everyday life. For example, don’t lift objects in an inappropriate way. If you exercise know how to properly warm up and cool down with gentle stress free exercises. Take care of the nerves in your back, and your back will get you through life – pain free.
