Avoid Back Pain – Learn How to Lift the Right Way

from:

When you are not lifting the right way then you are going to be much more prone to getting a back injury, and leg and arm pain, as well. You will be easily susceptible for acute back injury and pain that can lead to chronic pain. It is so very important to learn the appropriate way to lift heavy items to make sure you keep your back safe. You will want to be conscious of all your body movements and your posture at all time to be sure that you keep the proper alignment to stop any back injuries from occurring. You will want to try to avoid lifting alone all together than that is always the best choice opposed to possibly straining your back. For those people who have no choice than to lift a heavy object alone then make sure that you lift with your legs and hold the object close to your body to keep from injuring your back and spine. This will also help keep your balance to keep you on your feet.

To keep from tripping on your base, you will want to make sure that there is nothing sticking up, or that can make you slip, or make you lose your balance and injure your back. Make sure that you have room to move freely and easily to keep you from hitting other objects while transferring the item you are lifting. You will also want to keep your feet spread the width of your shoulders and stay slightly bent at the knees. This will help you keep your balance and be able to use your leg muscles, the largest muscles in the body, to help you lift an object that is heavy and take the strain off your back completely. Make sure to practice the lift before you perform it to know exactly how you will move and stay stable. Keep your spine straight, lift using your legs, and bending at the knees, never bend from the back. Try not to use the muscles in your back except to keep your posture appropriate. To help take the stress off your back muscles use your abdominal muscles to help hold your form. When it is time to put the item in its appropriate spot you will want to bend at the knees again to keep your body and back safe. Never try to lift an object alone that is too awkward or heavy for you. Always get someone else to help you instead.

For those people who have jobs that require lifting on a regular basis, it is a smart idea get a back belt. This will help keep your spine aligned and you back muscles safe. Many jobs now hand these out to make sure their employees stay safe and do not get injured if possible. It is also not worth injuring yourself and living with chronic back pain for the rest of your life. You will want to make sure that you do not twist or make awkward movements that could result in losing your balance in any way. If the object is too large, then get help when it is time to move it. It is always better to play it safe then wear it for the rest of your life with no reprieve. When walking with a heavy object take small steps while facing the direction you are going. If you must make a turn, do it very slowly and in small steps. Keep your eyes up to help you maintain your posture.

If you really want to be careful the smartest thing to do is to use equipment such as a dolly, a hand truck, or forklift. You can also put it on something with wheels and push or pull it to its destination this will give you much better leverage. You can also pull a secured item using mechanical means but make sure that any sudden stops will not make the item jar out of place. This jarring could cause injury to others or the item itself. When the item that needs to be moved is in a hard to reach location make sure you get as close to it as possible while still holding on to proper body mechanics.
